Pieces finished in the

wood kiln

Prism #1

Ceramic hand built pinched pot with geometrically carved lip. The surface treatment of this pot is entirely the result of the atmosphere of the flame and the ash around it during the firing. By strategically choosing a place in the wood kiln, I am able to angle the pot to catch soda and wood ash on the untreated surface as to highlight the ridges and valleys of my carvings.

Prism #2 Iridescent

Ceramic, hand built pinched pot with sculpted and carved lip. This pot has an iridescent surface resulting from a fuming technique achieved in the over 2000 degree atmosphere of a wood kiln. By placing a bowl of stannous chloride beside this pot in the wood kiln, the bare surface of the piece gets coated in the fumes of stannous chloride when it vaporizes during the firing of the kiln. Upon completion of the firing, there is an iridescent sheen to the surface of this work when it is moved around as light passes over the angles of the carvings.

Painted Canyon

This vessel is built from individually hand-rolled and then stacked coils of stoneware clay. This piece was painted from the base to the top with an ombre red to yellow design with colored slips and then partially fired to the "bisque" stage in an electric kiln. It was then removed and then placed in a wood kiln where it was fired to a high temperature. Adding soda ash to the kiln near the end of the firing creates the subtle bleaching effects of the slip painted color design in certain areas of the pot which indicates that the flame was in direct contact with that surface.

Entanglement

Coil-built wall hanging piece.
